I wiped down my laptop screen and water got through, it's gone now but is my laptop damaged?

So I was wiping down the screen on my laptop with a slightly dampened cloth since it was a bit dirty and I noticed some water had gotten through. It left a weird looking mark on the screen but it has slowly disappeared and nothing so far has happened. I even tried turning on my laptop again and it seems to be alright. It hasn't been 24 hours yet and it's almost all gone but I am afraid that it is going to become more damaged. Someone told me that the water has soaked through and that my laptop is going to be unusable soon. Is this true?
