Why is the economy the only thing people care about?

There is something of a priority list. The economy is always near the top, because many are affected. But then a war/peace issue comes up, or a natural disaster, or whatever, and it is trumped. If we had a nuclear plant go on the blink, I think nuclear energy would rapidly climb the ladder of importance.
